German painter and etcher, born 28.09.1865 in Oppeln, died 11.02.1926 in Flims (Graubünden)


1883-1887 studies at the Berlin Academy of Art, pupil of Bellermann and Meyerheim

1883-1926 lives in Berlin.

About the artist

 

 

 

Numerous trips to the north, Egypt, South Africa and India for the purpose of landscape and animal studies. Early enthusiasm for the animal kingdom, studies and draws tropical animals in their natural habitat. His works show all kinds of animals, he becomes a great master especially in his etchings and oil paintings. Kuhnert becomes famous as “Löwen-Kuhnert” [Lion-Kuhnert].

Persons are rarely depicted in his pictures. His fame is extended through his works as a book illustrator, e.g. “Brehms Tierleben” [Brehm’s Wildlife], “Das Tierleben der Erde” [Wildlife on Earth] by Haacke and the catalogue of his etchings by Hirzel “Im Lande meiner Modelle” [In the country of my models].
