Painting is a sensory process that both requires and presupposes inspiration, imagination and ability .

Painting is empathy, namely the sensing of something as yet incomplete, something that gradually develops on the canvas into a finished whole, into an inner vision of guided chance and emotional depth.

Conrad Sevens – the “painter of the soul”, as he has been called in the past – goes one step further in his latest paintings. In the works of the last few decades, Sevens concentrated largely upon representational landscapes that he imbued with luminosity in his own unmistakable manner: landscapes bathed in mist and pierced by solitary rays of sun light, stormy seas and rivers, woods in the early morning and meadows at dusk.

In his most recent works, however, his painterly focus has expanded to embrace the abstract. In the work of Conrad Sevens, emotional moods always resonate within his meditative strata. We hear the forest breathe, feel the droplets of mist glistening on the trees and plants, or see before our mind’s eye the moss pounded by the tumbling waters of the stream in the sunlight. Sevens’ brushwork and his application of up to 40 layers of paint infuse these works with an immense inner radiance, whose enormous sense of shimmering clarity, comforting warmth and moving intimacy holds us all captive.

At the same time, the painter also invokes antagonistic forms that cause a wild dynamic between light and dark, bursting clouds and tempestuous seas to unfold on the canvas.

Conrad Sevens reveals a world that conveys, to those who allow themselves to be touched by his art, a moving, almost spiritual sense of the beauty of nature and of being. These are pictures of inner colour, painted in a language characterized by a glorious wealth of delicate poetry."
